How Clinical Supervision Works

A Comprehensive Process Designed for Your Growth

Our supervision process is designed to support your growth and development as a therapist, ensuring you gain the skills and confidence needed to provide exceptional care to your clients.

1

Initial Consultation

We begin by understanding your needs, professional background, areas of interest, and specific challenges. This helps us tailor our approach to best support your development and career aspirations.

2

Personalized Plan Development

Based on the initial consultation, we develop a personalized supervision plan with clear, achievable goals. Whether mastering specific techniques, addressing ethical issues, or enhancing your overall practice, the plan is yours.

3

Regular Supervision Sessions

We engage in regular individual or group supervision sessions where we discuss cases, receive feedback, and explore new therapeutic techniques. Evaluations are completed by both you and your supervisor to ensure we stay on track.

Questions About Clinical Supervision

For individual supervision (50-minute sessions), we require that you meet a minimum of once a month with your supervisor, regardless of how many clients you are seeing. Keep in mind that for both LPC and LMFT licenses, you need to maintain a ratio of one supervision hour for every 20 client hours. For group supervision (2-hour sessions, virtual), we meet once a month and ask that you commit to attending for a set period. This allows us to plan effectively and maintain smaller group sizes.

Most of our supervision is done virtually, but we do offer both virtual and in-person sessions to accommodate different preferences and needs.

Choosing a clinical supervisor is a lot like choosing a therapist. Consider personality, training, and experience. Make sure your personalities will work well together. Think about the theories you want to train in or improve your skills with, and pick a supervisor who is trained in those same theories. Also consider how much experience you want your supervisor to have, both in their theoretical practice and in their supervisory practice.

Individual supervision is a 50-minute one-on-one session where we review session recordings, discuss ethical and legal issues, explore theoretical perspectives, focus on the self of the therapist, and set goals together. Group supervision is a 2-hour virtual session held once a month where one person presents a case, the group provides collaborative feedback, and everyone builds a community of colleagues who support each other's work.

Yes. Athena McCullough is an AAMFT Approved Supervisor, which means her supervision counts toward LPC and LMFT licensure hours in Colorado. Colorado requires one supervision hour for every 20 client hours for both licensure paths. We recommend confirming your specific requirements through DORA before getting started.

We begin with an initial consultation to understand your needs and goals for supervision. We will discuss your professional background, areas of interest, and specific challenges you may be facing. From there we develop a personalized supervision plan that outlines the focus areas and sets clear, achievable goals for your time in supervision.
