Why Do Couples Seek Therapy?
Building and maintaining a long-term healthy relationship is a learned skill that unfortunately may not have been modeled for many of us growing up; couples therapy can help you and your partner learn the skills necessary to understand and resolve relationship conflicts in a healthy way.
In therapy, we can help you deal with tough issues, like persistent arguments or recovering from an affair while making sure both of you feel heard and respected. The process can also help you decide what to do next, what each partner wants, and how it might affect any children you have.

COUPLES THERAPY IN COLORADO
What You Should Know Before Starting Couples Therapy
It can be hard to resolve challenges in a way that makes you feel seen and heard by your partner and feels good for both of you. The truth is that relationship issues are often rooted in longstanding trauma wounds and attachment issues. On your own, it’s hard to trace what’s happening today back to the past. This is why couples counseling is so valuable. It’s a chance to identify where the disconnection in your relationship comes from and work to repair it as a team.
It's Not Just for Crisis
Therapists Remain Neutral
Therapists stay neutral and don’t pick sides or place blame. We create a safe place where you can express your thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment. As we move through the process of therapy, this neutral ground helps you feel safe as you work together to fix problems and make your relationship better.
Communication Improvement
A communication breakdown is one of the biggest sources of relationship tension. In therapy, we work to improve your communication skills, active listening, and empathy to help you better understand each other and express your needs and feelings constructively. As your communication improves, you may find that conflicts become easier to resolve, trust strengthens, and your relationship becomes more satisfying and harmonious.
Conflict Resolution
Couples therapy equips you with conflict-resolution skills, helping you identify and address the root causes of your challenges rather than just managing the surface-level issues. This leads to lasting solutions and a healthier relationship.
Setting Goals
In therapy, we will set clear goals for the relationship. Whether it’s rebuilding trust, improving intimacy, or aligning on life goals, we can help you define what you want to achieve and create a plan to get there. However, regardless of your goals, therapy is most effective when both partners are willing to learn, grow, and heal individually and as a couple.
Privacy and Confidentiality
What you talk about in couples therapy is confidential. Therapists uphold strict confidentiality to ensure that both partners feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and emotions without fear of judgment or a confidentiality breach.

How couples therapy works

Assessment
We meet with you as a couple and also individually to understand your experiences. This helps us learn how your early relationships have influenced who you are today and how you connect with yourself and your partner.

Goal Setting
As we understand what challenges you are facing and what is most important to you, we go over the tools and strategies that will help each of you meet your partner’s needs in a way that resonates with them.

Therapy Sessions
Throughout our sessions, we reassess your progress and make adjustments to help you continue to nurture and strengthen the love and connection that helps you feel like you are working as a team.
How long will we need therapy?
It can be different for every couple. Depending on your goals, some may only need a few sessions to work on specific issues, while others might benefit from longer-term therapy. Successful therapy takes dedication, open communication, and a willingness from each of you to actively engage in the process of understanding and making positive changes in your relationship.
Is it normal to feel apprehensive about therapy?
Absolutely! Opening up about personal issues can be intimidating, and we understand that. Our team is trained to create a safe and non-judgmental space where you can feel comfortable sharing what’s on your mind. As we get to know each other better, you’ll likely find that therapy becomes a place where you can explore your thoughts and emotions openly, gaining deeper insights and discovering ways to overcome challenges together.
Can you help me with my relationship if my partner doesn’t want to come to therapy?
Yes, therapy can still be beneficial even if your partner doesn’t want to come. For instance, we can help you work on improving your own communication, coping skills, self-worth, and confidence which has a way of positively impacting your relationship! Additionally, discussing your concerns and experiences with your therapist may help you find ways to encourage your partner to join in the future.
Is what we discuss confidential?
In couples therapy, we operate by a no secrets policy, which means that we do not keep secrets from the other partner. However, everything that is shared between the couple and therapist is kept confidential from outside parties. The goal is to help you both share more openly with each other and tell the truth about how you feel and what you need. If something is shared directly with the therapist, that has been a secret from your partner, then we will have a conversation about how we can help you bring that to your partner and talk about it.
How is therapy different from reading a book and figuring out on our own?
There are a lot of great books that have been written by the very couples counselors whose models we use. So why should you choose counseling over a book? Well, for one thing, those books are not written with your relationship in mind. A book can give you helpful tips about relationships in general, but it cannot speak directly to your relationship. A couples therapist can address the strengths and weaknesses that are unique to your relationship and help you find solutions that are tailored to your needs.
I’m afraid you’ll side with my partner instead of me.
Our goal in couples therapy is to remain as neutral as possible. One thing we often say is that if something is a problem for one of you, it’s a problem for the relationship. Instead of figuring out who’s at fault, we want to help you work collaboratively to heal your disconnection. After all, it takes two people to resolve a relationship issue, regardless of where it started.
