Big feelings and all

Play Therapy for Children

Helping your child grow emotionally through play, connection, and compassion

Helping your child grow

When your child is struggling, it can be heartbreaking—and sometimes confusing. You may see meltdowns, withdrawal, big emotions, or changes in behavior and not know exactly what’s behind them. They may not have the words to tell you what’s wrong, but you know something’s not quite right.

We specialize in individual therapy for children ages 2 to 12, using developmentally appropriate, play-based methods that meet kids where they are. Our goal is to help your child express themselves, work through emotional challenges, and build the skills they need to feel more confident, connected, and calm.

You don’t have to decode it alone. We help children make sense of their inner world—so they can feel better, and you can breathe easier.

MCCULLOUGH FAMILY THERAPY

Our Approach

We understand that children express themselves differently than adults. That’s why we use play therapy and other creative tools—like drawing, storytelling, movement, and games—to help your child feel safe, engaged, and understood.

Through this process, we support your child in:

  • Naming and understanding their feelings
  • Processing difficult experiences in a gentle, contained way
  • Building coping skills to handle stress and frustration
  • Strengthening self-esteem and emotional flexibility
  • Improving peer relationships and communication skills

Our therapists build trust through consistent, attuned relationships and work at a pace that honors each child’s readiness and rhythm.

Your Role as a Parent

Parents play an essential part in the healing process. While sessions are one-on-one with your child, we keep you closely involved—with regular check-ins, insight into your child’s progress, and support in applying therapeutic tools at home.

We’re here to walk alongside you, answer your questions, and offer guidance every step of the way.

When Might a Child Need Therapy?

Even young children can experience stress, sadness, confusion, or worry. Therapy can be especially helpful when your child is:

  • Having difficulty managing big emotions like anger, fear, or frustration

  • Showing signs of anxiety or sadness

  • Struggling with separation, loss, or trauma

  • Adjusting to family changes such as divorce, relocation, or a new sibling

  • Experiencing peer or school-related challenges

  • Acting out in ways that seem new, intense, or out of character

  • Becoming more withdrawn or shutting down emotionally

If your child is struggling, you don’t have to face it alone.

We’re here to help your child feel safer, more confident, and better equipped to navigate the world—and to help you feel supported along the way.

Frequently Asked Questions About Play Therapy

STILL HAVE QUESTIONS?

It’s normal for children to experience ups and downs, but therapy may be helpful if you notice persistent changes in your child’s behavior, mood, or ability to cope. This can include ongoing tantrums, withdrawal, fears, trouble with peers, changes in sleep or appetite, or difficulty adjusting to family or school transitions. If you’re wondering whether therapy could help, we’re happy to talk with you about what you’re seeing and explore the next steps together.

Children’s sessions are built around play, creativity, and connection. Using developmentally appropriate techniques like art, sand tray, pretend play, or games, your child’s therapist creates a safe space where they can express themselves, explore feelings, and practice new skills. Sessions are generally 45–50 minutes and are tailored to your child’s age, needs, and comfort level.

Yes—parents play a vital role in the therapeutic process. Most sessions begin with a brief parent check-in, and every 4–6 sessions we’ll schedule a longer conversation to share insights, answer questions, and support you in applying what’s working at home. You’ll always be included and informed.

Therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Some children benefit from just a few months of support, while others may engage in longer-term therapy depending on their needs and progress. We’ll work with you to regularly assess how things are going and make recommendations that are responsive and realistic.

That’s completely okay—many children start out quiet or unsure. Our therapists know how to build trust and gently engage even the most hesitant kids through play, routine, and connection. As one of our favorite sayings goes: “Play is a child’s first language.” Children often express deep feelings and patterns through play, even before they have the words. Therapy moves at your child’s pace, and meaningful work begins the moment they feel safe.

Yes. We support children with or without formal diagnoses, including those with anxiety, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, sensory sensitivities, and more. Our therapists are trained in child development and neurodiversity-affirming approaches, and we adapt our work to each child’s unique needs and strengths.
